  • What Is Emotional Intelligence?
    What Is Emotional Intelligence? Emotional intelligence—sometimes shortened to EQ—measures your ability to identify, understand, and manage your emotions and the emotions of others. Here are the facets of EQ 1. Personal Competence Personal competence is how well you recognize and manage your emotions. It covers three elements: self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-motivation. 1a) Self-Awareness: Self-awareness is recognizing your emotions as they happen, understanding the reason behind them, and evaluating how your thoughts and behaviors are affected. 1b) Self-Regulation: Self-regulation is how you handle your emotions. It requires self-control and thinking before you act. 1c) Self-Motivation: your personal drive also known as intrinsic motivation. Using your own thoughts, emotions, and skills as tools to ensure dedication to your goals and avoid impeding behaviors like procrastination. 2. Social Competence Social competence is how well you recognize and manage others' emotions. The more adept your social competence, the more likely you are to build strong relationships and create meaningful interactions. 2a) Empathy: Empathy is understanding another’s emotions. It’s looking outside your own perspective and seeing things from someone else's viewpoint. A person with high empathy skills is able to feel the same emotion as the person they are connecting too. 2b) Social skills: How a person interacts with others. This competency is about action, active listening, curiosity in others and the choice to build relationships. Utilizing understanding of another’s feelings and creating positive exchanges with them to build or strengthen relationships.

    Do the following with your thoughts, emotions and actions Recognize: You recognize and label your feelings—even when emotions are running high. Understand: You understand why you're experiencing an emotion. Influence: You spot how your emotions influence your behavior and that of others. Doing regular check ins through out the day as well as journaling or meditating in the mornings and evenings are great tools to build your self-awareness.
